GVR's Big Event Has Two Ticket Prices. Here's What's Still Worth Booking Before Thanksgiving

October 22, 2026

A seat at the Cher tribute in the West Center Auditorium on Sunday, Nov. 15, costs $35 or $55. Both buyers see the same show. The only difference between them is a Green Valley Recreation card.

That $20 gap appears all through the second half of GVR's Big Event, the seven-week run of concerts, dances, club events, and day trips that GVR has gathered into one October and November 2026 season. The opening weekend is over. Oktoberfest with The Bouncing Czechs and the Huey Lewis tribute have already played. The rest of the calendar runs into the week before Thanksgiving, and on almost every ticketed night, the GVR card changes the price more than the choice of act does. Your price depends on how you come in: as a member, as a member's out-of-town visitor, or as a Green Valley neighbor whose address falls outside GVR.

The $20 Line Through the Calendar

These are the ticketed West Center Auditorium shows still on the schedule as of Thursday, Oct. 22, with both prices from GVR's Big Event listings.

Date Show Member/Guest General Public
Thu, Oct. 22, 6pm ABBA FAB: The Premier ABBA Experience $35 $55
Fri, Oct. 23, 7pm A Magical Evening with John Shryock $25 $45
Sat, Oct. 31, 6pm Halloween Dance with Hardscrabble Road $15 $25
Tue, Nov. 3, 7pm Almost Folsom: A Tribute to Johnny Cash $35 $55
Thu, Nov. 5, 7pm Disco Inferno: The Best of the Disco Era $35 $55
Sat, Nov. 7, 7pm Margaritas in Paradise: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett $30 $50
Mon, Nov. 9, 6pm The Laugh Lounge $20 $40
Wed, Nov. 11, 2pm Manhattan Dolls: Salute to America $30 $50
Sun, Nov. 15, 2pm Cher: The Beat Goes On, and On, and On… $35 $55
Thu, Nov. 19, 6pm Piece of My Heart: The Music and Friends of Janis Joplin $35 $55

At member prices, the cheapest concert on this list, the Laugh Lounge at $20, and the most expensive, a $35 tribute show, are $15 apart. The public surcharge on most of these nights is $20, and on the Halloween dance it is $10. For a non-member couple, the gap between their seats and a member couple's seats is larger than the gap between the cheapest and most expensive show on the program.

The surcharge is written policy, not a one-time markup. GVR's Corporate Policy Manual, dated Aug. 26, 2026, lists concerts, plays, and classes as activities open to non-members for a fee. It also says a surcharge "shall be added to tickets for GVR public events sold to non-GVR members," and that the CEO may waive it when an event has a co-sponsor. The section is in the policy manual under 6.1.3 and 6.1.4.

A few listings have details beyond the price. The Halloween dance is BYOB, GVR supplies snacks and setups, and costumes are optional. The Margaritas in Paradise lineup features Corey Spector's tribute, which GVR's listing describes as the Official Band for Jimmy Buffett Days in Key West. The Laugh Lounge is a Jason Love production pairing Love with comedian Matt Kirshen. The Manhattan Dolls salute falls on Veterans Day and features Armen Dirtadian in a 2pm patriotic program honoring service members.

Where the Card Decides Whether You Get In

For concerts, the card changes the price. For some of the season's smaller events, it decides whether you can attend at all.

The $2 movie matinees start at 2pm in the West Center Auditorium, with doors at 1pm and a $5 meal deal of a hot dog, chips, soda, and a sweet treat. GVR's listing says "GVR members and their guests are welcome," and no public price is listed. Still to come are Solo Mio on Oct. 27, a free screening of American Graffiti on Oct. 29, The Last Rodeo on Nov. 4, and Epic: Elvis Presley in Concert on Nov. 17, with The Santa Clause on Dec. 3. The Matinee Madness Pass bundles seven admissions, seven bags of popcorn, and seven sodas or bottled waters for $25.

The GVR Line Dancers Club's last Big Event session is Friday, Nov. 6, from 2 to 4pm on the West Center Auditorium dance floor. Club members teach the dances and then dance alongside newcomers. It is free, no partner is needed, and it is open to all GVR members.

The newest event of the season has the most interesting rule. The First Annual GVR Open is a scramble on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Haven Golf Course, 110 N. Abrego, just behind GVR's East Center. The $95 registration covers 18 holes, a shared cart, a swag bag with golf balls, tees, and a towel, and a burger barbecue at East Center afterward. GVR members may register themselves and up to three more players, and every team must include at least two GVR members. Registration is in person or by phone with GVR Customer Service at 520-625-3440, and questions go to [email protected].

Under that two-member rule, a member can bring a non-member neighbor and an out-of-town relative and still field a full foursome, as long as a second member fills one of the other spots. Haven's own site calls the course Green Valley's "golf walker friendly course" and lists the nine-hole Tortuga par-3 course on the same property. Its fall overseeding restrictions, which kept play cart-path-only, ended Oct. 10.

Members planning a swim in the last week of October should know that the Las Campanas pool and spa are scheduled to close Oct. 26 through 30 for equipment updates.

Bringing Family Into the Member Column

The Big Event overlaps with the stretch when out-of-town family starts arriving for the holidays, so GVR's guest rules affect which column a visit falls in. GVR defines a guest as a temporary visitor of a member. Its guests and tenants page sets out these terms:

  • Guests 18 and older need a guest card, and every guest must live at least 20 miles outside GVR's established boundaries.
  • The member has to make the first guest card purchase in person. Later reloads can be done in person or by phone.
  • Members can buy guest cards only for their primary property, not for a property they rent out.
  • Renters, including Airbnb and Vrbo guests, do not count as guests and need tenant cards instead.
  • A Daily Guest Pass is $5 for one guest per day, and a Weekly Guest Pass is $15 for seven consecutive days. An Annual Guest Card is $85 for 60 days of access within twelve months and covers up to four guests per visit.
  • Each card carries a $5 issuance fee the first time it is issued, and the card can be reloaded later.

Under the 20-mile rule, a daughter visiting from Phoenix qualifies as a guest, while a friend from Sahuarita or Tucson does not. Ticket listings use the label "Member/Guest" without spelling out how guest pricing is applied at purchase. Before buying several seats for a visiting group, a quick call to GVR Customer Service at 520-625-3440 is the simplest way to confirm which price applies. GVR's card fees and access rules are its own and can change, so treat this as general information and confirm the current terms with GVR directly.

The Weekend the Two Prices Disappear

One event on the remaining calendar removes the two-price system entirely. The GVR Lapidary Club's annual Artisans' Festival runs Friday, Nov. 13, and Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9am to 3pm both days at West Center, 1111 S GVR Drive. The club's flyer advertises free admission and free parking. According to the October issue of GVR NOW!, the festival features pottery, ceramics, paintings, glass art, woodwork, and more, all made by GVR members.

The festival is open to everyone because of a specific policy carve-out. GVR's manual generally limits sales of member-made craft work to members and guests, but it exempts arts and craft fairs because the IRS treats them as occasional and incidental sales. On that weekend, a Quail Creek household, a GVR member, and a visiting cousin from Ohio all pay the same price, which is nothing.

Outside GVR entirely, Pima County's September–October outdoor guide lists one more inexpensive morning before the month ends. Birding Canoa Ranch on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 7:30 to 9:30am at 5375 S. I-19 Frontage Rd. costs $5 and covers the ranch pond, the cienega, and the surrounding desert. It needs no card, no surcharge, and no foursome, and with a 9:30 finish there's plenty of time for a 2pm matinee.

What's Already Spoken For

GVR lists several Big Event day trips as sold out, with waitlists open. These include the Arizona Cardinals vs. Denver Broncos VIP trip on Oct. 25, the Queen Creek Olive Mill visit on Nov. 4, and the Mesa Market Place shopping day on Nov. 20. The Borderlandia Nogales Taco Tour is listed for both Oct. 25 and Nov. 22, with more dates scheduled in December and into early 2027. Check the current status of any specific date on GVR's events page before planning around it.
